These anchors were used by the Romans to secure their vessels while anchored in ports or at sea from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD. Throughout history, Roman anchors underwent an evolution in design and size, reflecting advancements in shipbuilding during that era. Typically made of iron or bronze, they featured a distinctive design with a long shank and a “T”-shaped fluke at the end, providing stability and gripping capability on different types of seabed.
Roman anchors have been discovered in numerous archaeological sites along the Mediterranean coasts and other regions where the Romans had maritime presence.
